- Toys and play products for children with disabilities
- AblePlay™ is a toy rating system and website that provides comprehensive information on items so one can make the best choices and purchases for their special someone. Products have been rated for their appropriateness for physical, sensory, communicative and cognitive disabilities and also come with play ideas that help children develop skills and abilities while having fun. One example that incorporates physical activity into its use is listed below:
- The Ribit Ball, by Bill and Bud, Inc., has received a favorable rating for children with Cerebral Palsy. The sizes and ribs on these balls increase the opportunity for successful play, allowing a child to grasp, catch, kick and throw it much easier than a traditional ball.
- For more information, go to www.ableplay.org or contact 773-528-5766 or info@ableplay.org.
- Let's Play! Projects look to provide families with ways to play through the use of assistive technology. These projects provide ideas and strategies to promote play through better access to play materials, and use assistive technology to give the children this critical access. Since play is how kids grow, all children need opportunities to discover and actively explore the world around them. Go to http://letsplay.buffalo.edu for information on selecting toys for play, toys for children with disabilities, adapting toys to make them easier to use, locating specially designed toys as well as other resources to promote play. In addition, experts from Let's Play! have developed a partnership with Fisher-Price® to create toys and playtime tips for children with disabilities which includes a section on "Moving".
