With depression being such a widespread and costly health care issue in America, and traditional treatments such as antidepressants and psychotherapy being time consuming, costly, often ineffective, and potentially creating unpleasant side effects or social stigmas, exercise may offer an affordable, available, and healthy part of a treatment plan. The promotion of physical activity as a primary treatment option for depression will continue to be an important public health strategy due to its co-morbidity and adverse symptoms. Exercise for individuals with depression should be added into a lifestyle routine as the best effects are seen from long-term and consistent physical activity.
